December Arrives in Plymbury
December arrived in Plymbury with a chill that hinted at snow but never quite committed. Ravenna drove through town on her way home, admiring the magical glow of string lights and the pine wreaths hung on doors.
Back at the apothecary, she paused by the window to watch Klay hang garland outside, the bells on the shop door chiming with every trip he made. Across the street, Ashley arranged evergreen swags intertwined with soft golden lights beneath her café windows.
Inside, Ravenna chose her decorative greens with intention. Sprigs of cedar for protection. Rosemary for remembrance. Twined holly for the returning light.
As she gathered them, a warmth pulsed faintly beneath her fingertips. By twilight, the entire apothecary glowed with candles tucked into the window sills, and she hung a single sea-glass-and-greenery wreath upon the door.
Skye wandered in. “We look as festive as the rest of town,” she said. “Do you think anyone will misunderstand?”
“It’s all right,” Ravenna said, adjusting a candle’s wick. “In our hearts, we’re celebrating the turning of the sun. Christmas, Yule, Hanukkah, Solstice—every tradition carries its own kind of hope this time of year.”
As they stood together, the sea-glass wreath brightened—not all at once, but in a soft wave of light, each shard catching some quiet, unseen spark. Then, just as gently, it faded, leaving the room warm and humming with peace.
Outside, the long-held snow finally began to fall, each flake joining the others in a unified, luminous rhythm.
