The Greene Family Thanksgiving

Ravenna spent the morning trying to convince the turkey not to burn.

Not the real one—she was a vegetarian—but the ceramic one Maeve insisted held the warmth of every Thanksgiving past. This year, Skye had filled it with cranberry compote that shimmered like garnet beneath the candlelight, carrying the sweet fragrance of simmered berries and citrus, warming the room with nostalgia.

The table glowed with flickering tapers, casting soft shadows across roasted root vegetables. Ravenna’s familiar curled at her feet, sensing the quiet magic building beneath the laughter.

Ravenna, Skye, Maeve, Klay, Ava, and Ashley each wrote one thing they were thankful for on a sea glass shard.

Just a single word.

A simple truth gathered from somewhere deep within: Endurance. Belonging. Wholeness. Peace. Second chances. Home.

They placed the shards in a bowl at the center of the table, and when the final candle flame trembled out, threads of light rose from the sea glass, drifting gently toward each person. The light kissed their faces like a blessing, then dissolved into the air.

Ava’s eyes widened; she reached up to touch her cheek. “Does… does it always do that?”

“Always shmalways. Only when there’s real gratitude,” Maeve said.

“It’s like… telling us we did good this year,” Skye said.

Klay nodded and wrapped his arm around Skye, pulling her close. “Better than okay. We’re all here. Together.”

Ravenna met her daughter’s eyes, then glanced around the table at the people she loved. “I have something I want to say.” She swallowed, knowing how different this year’s Thanksgiving could have been. “I’m grateful for all of you. For this.”

Ava’s smile softened. “And I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”

Maeve tapped her glass gently. “To good health,” she said, giving Ashley a pointed look. “And to family—however it’s made, and however it grows.”

Ravenna lifted her glass. “To holding on to what matters most.”

They clinked their glasses, and Ravenna listened to their overlapping murmurs of “Cheers” and “Happy Thanksgiving,” letting gratitude settle like a steady warmth inside her.
